The American Songbook would be full of holes and gaps were it not for Duke Ellington. Whilst some writers pen in quantity, others opt for quality – Duke Ellington was one of the very few able to combine both. More than a thousand songs poured from his pen, including such classics as 'It Don’t Mean A Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing)', 'Prelude To A Kiss', 'I Got It Bad And That Ain’t Good', 'Satin Doll', 'Sophisticated Lady' and 'Ko-Ko', to name but a few. What lifts Ellington so far above many of his contemporaries is the fact that he was also an accomplished band leader in his own right and perhaps the best man to offer interpretations of his own compositions. He continued touring and recording into the 1970s, shortly before his death in 1974 at the age of 75. As this album proves beyond all doubt, he left behind a musical legacy second to none. |
