Water Boy Born the son of a slave, Paul Robeson’s rightful place in musical history has finally been ensured, a situation that must have seemed quite unlikely during the early 1950s. Paul first came to prominence in the 1920s soon after graduating from university with a law degree, for he turned his back on the law profession and instead appeared with the Princetown Players in The Emperor Jones. His abilities were quickly noted and he was considered for the Broadway production of Show Boat in 1927, finally appearing in the musical in the London version the following year. By the 1930s his reputation had extended internationally as both an actor and concert singer, but he had also become something of a spokesman on a number of human rights issues, most notably the rise of fascism in Europe. His often outspoken comments eventually attracted the attention of the House of Un-American Activities Committee and he was blacklisted, his passport was taken away in 1950 and his records withdrawn from sale. His passport was finally returned in 1958 and he undertook a number of world tours before his retirement in 1961, setting in motion the reconciliation with the public worldwide.
