Nat King Cole first came to prominence during the 1930s with a hugely successful series of radio broadcasts that featured his own trio, a group that were firmly installed as one of the best jazz groups around. Although Nat performed the occasional vocal, he was not comfortable as a singer initially, thinking his voice was not strong enough. In the event, it was his subdued singing style that was responsible for making him a major style.
Along the way Nat tried songs that were not strictly jazz, prompting some critics to accuse him of selling out, but as hit followed hit the only thing he was guilty of was of selling in - he was selling more records than any of his contemporaries. This album, together with two further volumes, provides perfect proof of his abilities. |
