Although Kiss Me Kate is indelibly linked with Cole Porter, the idea for the show was down to producer Saint Subber in 1935. Whilst working as a stagehand for the Theatre Guild’s production of William Shakespeare’s The Taming Of The Shrew, Subber was intrigued by the off-stage relationship of husband and wife stars Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne, as tempestuous as the characters they were supposed to be portraying!
Subber approached comedy writing team Samuel and Bella Spewack (another married couple, although they were at the time separated) with his idea and they came up with the basics of the story within a play; we follow egotistical actor and producer Fred Graham as he tries to coerce a performance out of his ex-wife and co-star Lilli Vanessi in a production of The Taming Of The Shrew.
It is, of course, Cole Porter’s superb score that makes the production, borrowing heavily from Shakespeare’s dialogue to create a masterpiece of the theatre. The show Kiss Me Kate opened in 1948 with Alfred Drake and Patricia Morison in the lead roles and was an instant success, running for 1,070 performances. The film version, made in 1953 by MGM starred Howard Keel and Kathryn Grayson in the lead roles and was another resounding success. |
